Former Kingston Police sergeant avoids jail in subordinate assault case

Former Kingston Police sergeant Jason Alblas will not serve prison time but now carries a criminal record after Justice Geoffrey Griffin rejected both sides' sentencing submissions, thewhig.com reports.

Delivering his decision Thursday at Napanee's Ontario Court of Justice, Griffin imposed a suspended sentence accompanied by 18 months of probation and 100 hours of community service. The Crown had sought a custodial sentence; the defence had argued for a conditional discharge. Griffin sided with neither.

Alblas, whose policing career spanned more than two decades, was convicted of assaulting a female constable under his direct supervision. Under the terms of the sentence, he must attend counselling as directed, maintain no direct or indirect contact with the complainant, and keep a distance of at least 250 metres from her at all times.

In reaching his decision, Griffin weighed the serious breach of trust inherent in a senior officer assaulting a subordinate against the rehabilitation progress and career consequences already experienced by Alblas.

The sentencing closes proceedings in a trial that began on 29 May 2025 and stretched across numerous sitting dates over more than a year.
