Fourth Montreal officer suspended amid Station 39 racism probe

A fourth officer from Montreal's disbanded Station 39 unit has been suspended over racism allegations. The SPVM investigation, launched in June, now covers 16 officers.

Google News CA — Crime (EN) reports that a fourth Montreal police officer has been suspended in connection with an ongoing investigation into allegations of racism at Station 39 in the Montreal North borough.

The officer's suspension took effect on Aug. 19, according to a news release issued by the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM). The alleged incidents occurred while the officer was assigned to the unit, which was dissolved in June following misconduct and racism allegations.

"The SPVM reiterates that discriminatory or racist behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated, whether among its staff or toward citizens," the release stated.

Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher had announced at a late-night news conference on June 12 that 16 officers from Station 39 were under investigation, with two facing immediate suspension over allegations of racial misconduct toward individuals they stopped while on duty.

In a public meeting on Aug. 11, Dagher announced a third suspension tied to a separate incident involving another individual. The first two suspensions, he said, were linked to a single incident involving one person.

The investigation is being overseen by the SPVM's Professional Standards Division and remains ongoing.
