Glovertown gymnastics club shuts down amid RCMP fraud probe

The Glovertown Hurricanes Gymnastics Club has ceased operations after police opened an investigation into alleged financial irregularities, Google News CA — Crime (EN) reports, citing a closure statement posted to the club's Facebook page.

A memo addressed to athletes and their families, dated May 26 and published online on September 1, confirmed the closure. "The decision is due to a lack of available coaches, as well as an ongoing investigation by the RCMP involving allegations of fraud within the club, which has resulted in the suspension of two board members," the statement read.

The RCMP confirmed the investigation to CBC News on Thursday, describing it in an emailed statement as a probe into "possible financial irregularities" involving the club. Police declined to provide further details, citing the active nature of the investigation.

The closure memo was signed by four current board members. The board had previously consisted of six people. CBC News reached out to the two individuals not listed on the letter — one declined to comment, directing queries to the ongoing police investigation, while the other did not respond.

The remaining board said it was committed to openness with members and the wider community. "We remain hopeful that, with time and the support of our community, the Glovertown Hurricanes Gymnastics can overcome these challenges and return as a strong, thriving organization," the statement said.

Several parents of club members told CBC News the situation was distressing, though none agreed to be interviewed on the record.

Glovertown is a small community in central Newfoundland. It is not yet known when, or whether, the club will resume operations.
