UTM campus locked down over police activity at McLuhan Court Residence
Students at the University of Toronto's Mississauga campus were ordered to shelter in place late Monday night following reports of police activity on campus, Toronto Sun Crime reports.
The university's social media account issued an alert advising the campus community to remain in place after officials received reports of an incident at McLuhan Court Residence, located at 3330 Residence Rd. "Shelter in place until further instructions," the alert read. "Emergency responders have been notified and are on scene."
Multiple reports indicated that emergency officials were responding to an "active threat," though the nature of that threat was not immediately clarified.
In a statement to the Toronto Sun, university officials said they were "aware of police activity on the University of Toronto Mississauga campus" and had issued a campus-wide shelter-in-place alert. The statement said alerts would continue to be sent every 30 minutes "until police deem the area safe," and directed further inquiries to Peel Regional Police. A request for comment from Peel Regional Police was not immediately returned.
The school's campus status map logged a "critical" update at approximately 10:31 p.m. Monday, confirming the lockdown remained in effect. Officials urged anyone in the area to stay away from the campus entirely and to keep roads, routes, and walkways clear for emergency personnel.
Those already on campus were instructed to remain at least 30 metres from entrances to affected buildings and not to re-enter any affected building until cleared to do so by campus security or police.
