Two Burnaby residents charged in death of 11-year-old Kai Pavlovic

Two Burnaby residents have been charged in connection with the homicide of 11-year-old Kai Pavlovic, whose remains were found more than a year after he was reported missing, Global News Crime reports.

According to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), Burnaby RCMP received a welfare check request on Sept. 26, 2025, for Pavlovic, who was last known to be living with family in the city. Officers were unable to locate the boy over several days, and the case was transferred to Burnaby RCMP's Serious Crimes Unit (SCU).

Over the following months, SCU conducted an extensive investigation, following up on tips from family members and members of the public. IHIT assumed control of the case on June 25, 2026, and the investigation ultimately led to the discovery of Pavlovic's remains.

On Oct. 30, 2026, investigators arrested Branko Bijelic, 51, of Burnaby. The BC Prosecution Service subsequently approved charges of second-degree murder and indignity to human remains against him. Sarah Bijelic, 46, also of Burnaby, was charged with one count of manslaughter.

IHIT did not disclose any connection between the Bijelics and Pavlovic.

"It is with heavy hearts that we share this update in the investigation into Kai's death," said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. "There are no words to accurately express the sadness surrounding the circumstances."

Fong added that investigators recognize the concern the case has caused in the community and that their thoughts remain with Pavlovic's loved ones and those affected by the tragedy.
