A 57-year-old man died after Edmonton officers opened fire at a west-end hotel Monday evening. Alberta's police watchdog ASIRT is now investigating.

Google News CA — Crime (EN) reports that Alberta's police watchdog is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting at the Hilton Garden Inn, near Stony Plain Road and 178th Street in west Edmonton.

Edmonton Police Service responded to a weapons complaint at 7:14 p.m. Monday after reports that two men inside a hotel room, one of whom was allegedly armed with a firearm.

Officers contained the area upon arrival and attempted to communicate with the men. According to police, a man was observed exiting and re-entering the secured hotel room multiple times before advancing toward officers carrying a pair of scissors.

Two officers discharged their firearms. The 57-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said officers performed life-saving measures before his death was confirmed.

No officers or other emergency personnel sustained injuries.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), the province's independent police oversight body, confirmed the location of the incident to CBC News and has assumed responsibility for the investigation. ASIRT examines all serious incidents involving police in Alberta, including those resulting in death or serious injury.
