Police watchdog reviews RCMP arrest at Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation

Google News CA — Crime (EN) reports that Newfoundland and Labrador's police watchdog has launched a review after a violent RCMP arrest in the Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation community was captured on video and shared on Facebook.

The footage appears to show three RCMP officers arresting a man inside a home. When the man pulls his hand back from police, one officer punches him in the face. The video then shows the man thrown against a wall, punched again, taken to the ground, and struck several more times before an officer appears to deploy a stun gun on him multiple times.

The RCMP confirmed in a statement that it has met with community leaders and referred the matter to Newfoundland and Labrador's Serious Incident Response Team for review.

"RCMP met with Grand Chief Jodie Ashini, Chief Eugene Hart and other community leaders in Sheshatshiu Wednesday evening to review this incident and their concerns, and we will continue to engage directly with the community in these important conversations," the Mounties said in a statement Thursday.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 3, 2026.
