Human remains discovered in bins at Calgary condo during welfare check
According to cbc.ca, a Calgary couple has been charged with committing indignity to a dead body after police discovered human remains stored in containers inside their northeast Calgary home.
Michael Lee, 49, and Helen Lee, 50, each face one count of indignity to a dead body following what Calgary Police Service has described as a suspicious death investigation. Officers initially attended the couple's condo in the Skyview Ranch community to conduct a welfare check, and during a subsequent search found body parts in two bins. Court documents allege the pair "improperly or indecently interfered" with human remains "through storage in containers," with the alleged offence listed as occurring between Oct. 23 and Oct. 27, 2026.
Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Ken Hashman told the court that at the time of the search, the couple had been living with the woman whose remains were later found in the bins. The condo was described as a hoarding situation, with "only a very narrow aisle where people could walk through," Hashman said.
Serious psychiatric concerns raised over Michael Lee
On Friday, both accused appeared in court after each met individually with Hashman. The psychiatrist expressed "significant concerns" that Michael Lee may be suffering "some form of psychotic mental disorder that would have serious impact on his potential fitness to stand trial." Hashman also noted concerns about an impaired grasp of reality, as well as delusions and hallucinations.
Michael Lee appeared in court wearing a blue jail-issued jumpsuit. He addressed the court himself, raising concerns about changes to the sky and declaring that he is the "king of Canada." Hashman told the judge that during their interview, Michael Lee stated the world is about to experience armageddon and that everyone will die.
Justice Van de Veen ordered Michael Lee to the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre for a 30-day assessment to determine whether he is fit to stand trial — a process that evaluates whether an accused understands court proceedings and can instruct a lawyer. He is expected to return to court at the end of November.
Helen Lee to return next week
Hashman told the court he had no fitness concerns regarding Helen Lee. Her case was adjourned to the following week.
Calgary police said earlier this week that officers were working to confirm the identity of the remains and the circumstances of the death. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday, but results have not yet been released.
