Two arrested after high-speed stolen vehicle chase ends in crash near Regina
Two men have been charged following a dangerous high-speed incident in which a stolen vehicle reached 180 km/h before plunging off a steep embankment near Regina, Global News Crime reports.
Patrol officers spotted the stolen vehicle being driven recklessly near Victoria Avenue and Athol Street shortly after midnight on Wednesday. Given the extreme speed involved, ground units chose not to pursue the car directly. "Due to safety concerns related to the high rate of speed, Patrol officers on the ground did not pursue the vehicle. ASU took over and tracked it from the sky," Regina police said in a news release, referring to the department's aerial support unit.
The driver headed south of Regina, racing along several grid roads before making his way toward the town of Lumsden. Once there, the vehicle was driven erratically through residential streets, nearly colliding head-on with multiple motorists.
The driver then turned onto railway tracks in an apparent attempt to continue his escape before losing control and going off a steep embankment.
Both occupants fled the crash on foot. A search involving Regina police and the RCMP was launched. Officers, assisted by aerial and canine units, located one suspect hiding in nearby bushes. He allegedly refused to comply and assaulted a police service dog, which bit him during the apprehension. He was subsequently taken into custody.
The second suspect, identified by police as the driver, was found inside a building in the area and arrested without incident. He was transported to hospital with minor injuries sustained in the crash.
A 42-year-old man — identified as the driver — has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, dangerous operation of a conveyance, two counts of operating a conveyance while prohibited, and break and enter with intent. He was also arrested on outstanding warrants.
