Winnipeg man dies after police use Taser during Transcona arrest

A 42-year-old man died in hospital after Winnipeg police deployed a Taser during his arrest in the city's Transcona neighbourhood early Sunday, Google News CA — Crime (EN) reports.

Officers responded at 4:23 a.m. to multiple 911 calls on McMeans Avenue E., near Redonda Street, following reports of a man behaving erratically — walking up and down the street and removing his clothing, according to a Monday police news release.

One of those calls came from the man himself and a woman who told dispatchers they were experiencing "adverse effects" after consuming drugs.

At 4:31 a.m., a nearby resident called 911 to report that the same man had broken into his home and assaulted him before leaving. Patrol officers located the man naked in the area. He refused to comply with officers' commands and fled on foot.

Officers gave chase and used a Taser during what police described as a "use of force encounter," after which the man was taken into custody.

He subsequently showed signs of an "agitated chaotic event" and became unresponsive. Officers administered CPR until paramedics arrived. The man was transported to hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead there.

One officer sustained a minor leg injury during the incident, police said.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, which examines all serious incidents involving police, has assumed conduct of the investigation into the man's death.
