Fresh opiate seizure in Nicosia leads to arrest of detained man

Fresh opiate seizure in Nicosia leads to arrest of detained man

Anti-drug officers in Nicosia uncovered and confiscated another batch of opiate-based narcotics weighing one kilogram in total, according to Φιλελεύθερος.

The package, containing dried poppy pods of the species Papaver somniferum, arrived at a courier-company premises in the capital on 22 June 2026. It was addressed to a 35-year-old who was taken into custody on the basis of a court order.

The same individual had already been held since 19 June 2026 over a separate drug-trafficking file involving the discovery of more than ten kilograms of opiate material. A 31-year-old woman is also in custody for that earlier case.

The Nicosia branch of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (Ykan) is continuing its inquiries into both matters.
