Police on alert for terrorist threats, says spokesman
Cypriot law enforcement and relevant state agencies are maintaining continuous vigilance against potential terrorist threats, particularly in light of recent developments in the Middle East, according to police spokesman Byron Byronos.
The spokesperson noted that intelligence sharing and cooperation with foreign security services contribute to the timely identification of individuals who may be planning terrorist acts.
Regarding an investigation in Cyprus into terrorism-related offences, Byronos stated that four people are currently in custody. He declined to comment on information concerning the arrest of a 37-year-old suspect in Greece who is reportedly linked to this case.
He emphasised that the Republic maintains close cooperation with EU member states and other countries, as well as with international organisations such as Europol and Interpol, in the framework of preventing and countering terrorist threats.
When asked about the readiness of Cypriot police to respond to potential terrorist actions, Byronos said the authorities have been on high alert for some time, particularly since the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East. He added that there is cooperation with other countries' foreign services, information exchanges take place under existing bilateral agreements, and measures are taken to detect anyone considering carrying out terrorist acts on Cypriot soil.
Byronos clarified that he could not provide further details on the specific matter, as it concerns national security issues. However, he assured citizens that the authorities remain vigilant to identify any threat.
