A security force officer died in the early hours of Tuesday in Florencio Varela, a municipality in Greater Buenos Aires, after being struck by a bullet in the head during an operation aimed at dismantling a drug trafficking network. The uniformed officer, identified as Sergeant Facundo Giménez, was part of the Tactical Operations Group that was conducting a raid on a residence in the Pico de Oro neighbourhood when the occupants opened fire with firearms.
The officer was moving across a vacant lot near the operation site when he was struck by the projectile. Colleagues immediately transported him to the nearest hospital, but medical personnel certified his death shortly after his admission.
As a result of the confrontation, police managed to apprehend three men who are now being investigated for the murder: a 15-year-old youth, another aged 26 and a third aged 28. Authorities are working to establish the degree of responsibility of each one in the fatal attack.
Giménez's death adds to that of Rodolfo Manfredi, a Federal Police member murdered days earlier in Rosario under similar circumstances, which reignites the debate over the risk exposure faced by officers who combat the illegal drug trade.
