A man from the Jennersdorf district in Styria used an illegally obtained driving licence over a period of 16 years. During a traffic check, police finally discovered that the document was forged.
The man in question had apparently acquired the driving licence abroad without having taken the required tests. It is not known exactly how long he carried the forged document or how many times he got through checks with it.
The competent court has now sentenced the man to a fine. The exact amount of the penalty was not disclosed. The case once again demonstrates how long forged documents can remain undiscovered when they appear visually convincing.
The authorities point out that possession and use of forged official documents are prosecuted under criminal law. Driving licences acquired abroad must be converted in Austria, provided they are recognised at all.
