Senior robbed in Salzburg: Colombian woman tried for "ketchup trick"

As salzburg.orf.at reports, a 52-year-old Colombian woman is to appear before the court in Salzburg on Tuesday facing charges of aggravated theft. She and two accomplices are accused of stealing €10,000 in cash from a 90-year-old Salzburg resident using the so-called "ketchup trick".

The modus operandi according to the charges: the perpetrators deliberately squirted ketchup on the victim's jacket, apologised and offered to clean the stain immediately – whilst doing so they unnoticed reached into the senior's pockets. The 90-year-old was apparently grateful not to have to deal with the soiled jacket himself. In the end, the €10,000 he had withdrawn in cash from a bank shortly before was missing.

According to the charges, the trio is said to have observed the senior during the bank withdrawal. Police subsequently conducted a search for the three Colombian suspects using surveillance camera footage. Police apprehended one of the men in the Italian city of Milan, and the woman was arrested in Innsbruck, where she has since been held in custody awaiting trial.

It is currently unknown whether the man arrested in Milan has already been tried in Italy. If convicted in Salzburg, the woman faces up to three years in prison.
