Knife attack in Gersdorf an der Mur: dispute over borrowed money escalates
According to the Kleine Zeitung, a serious knife attack occurred on Thursday afternoon in Gersdorf an der Mur, municipality of Straß, between two young men. The trigger was a debt dispute over 100 euros.
According to police, the 19-year-old from southern Styria had borrowed the amount from his 17-year-old acquaintance around a week earlier. When the latter demanded the money back, the two agreed to meet on Thursday.
At around 16.45 hours, the 19-year-old suddenly drew a knife from his clothing and stabbed the teenager multiple times with it – mainly in the upper body area. He then threw the weapon into an adjacent wooded area and fled. Two acquaintances of the victim gave chase. After a brief physical altercation, the perpetrator managed to escape into the forest once more.
The emergency services that were alerted immediately initiated a large-scale manhunt. A police dog located the discarded weapon, and police arrested the 19-year-old shortly afterwards. The state criminal police took over the investigation.
During questioning, the young man from southern Styria confessed. He stated that he had brought the knife as a precaution because he was already expecting a conflict. He described the act itself as a spontaneous loss of control; he cited insult to honour as his motive.
The victim sustained serious injuries. After initial treatment by the Red Cross, the 17-year-old was flown to LKH Graz by rescue helicopter. According to police, he is out of danger.
