A couple from Klagenfurt fell victim to telephone fraud, as kaernten.orf.at reports. Both 41-year-olds had a low five-figure euro amount withdrawn from their accounts by an unknown caller.
Late on Wednesday afternoon, the woman received a call from an Austrian number. The caller presented himself as an employee of her bank and claimed that someone had attempted to withdraw several thousand euros from her account. To stop the transaction, he urgently needed access to her online banking.
The woman followed his instructions and granted him access to her banking app. Subsequently, the caller explained that the home WLAN had also been hacked and that her husband's account was also affected. The 41-year-old man then granted the unknown person access to his account as well.
In total, amounts in the low five-figure euro range were withdrawn from both accounts. The couple subsequently filed a report with the police.
