Drug checks in Graz: Five drivers found unfit to drive
On Monday, 26 October 2026, Graz Traffic Inspection 2 carried out targeted focused checks throughout the day in the districts of Gries and Lend. The emphasis was on alcohol and drug impairment whilst driving, as reported by 5min.at.
Five vehicle drivers were suspected of being under the influence of drugs. All five were taken for medical examination by a police doctor – and in all cases the suspicion was confirmed. A police doctor classified all those affected as unfit to drive. Four of them had to surrender their driving licences provisionally. The fifth did not possess a valid driving licence.
In addition to the impaired drivers, officers also seized small quantities of cannabis and what appeared to be cocaine. Furthermore, police stopped a man who was driving an unregistered e-moped. He refused both a breathalyser test and submission to medical examination by a police doctor – he too faces a charge.
The balance sheet of the checks is extensive: 18 charges in total, of which 16 were for traffic law violations and two for breaches of the Narcotics Act. Seven drivers were prohibited from continuing their journey. Such operations aim to increase the safety of all road users, according to the Styrian State Police Directorate.
