A judicial hearing will be held on Monday to analyse the physical condition of Tatiana Marset, held in a penitentiary centre in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Her legal representative intends for the court to authorise medical treatment outside the prison facility and to evaluate the possibility of some benefit that would allow her to follow the proceedings from outside.
Mónica Terrazas, in charge of her defence, announced that she will present medical documentation to the tribunal that supports the deterioration of her client's health. According to the professional, the woman suffers from complications arising from kidney stones, a condition that would cause her intense discomfort and would affect the functioning of the pancreas and liver.
"She is extremely frail," Terrazas declared. The jurist questioned whether the San Juan de Dios hospital had not noticed the renal deterioration in a previous examination, even though on that occasion they had performed imaging studies and a thorough review.
The defence counsel confirmed that a report produced by the penitentiary authorities has already been notified to the magistrate in charge, so that he may order immediate medical assistance for the inmate at an external institution. "She suffers from numerous kidney stones and is currently experiencing pain," she emphasised.
In mid-May, Marset was taken to San Juan de Dios hospital under significant police deployment. Initially there was speculation about pancreatic inflammation, but laboratory tests refuted that conjecture and established that the patient had type A hepatitis, a circumstance that led to her return to Palmasola prison.
The defendant is a relative of the renowned Uruguayan drug trafficker Sebastián Marset, who was captured on 13 May in the Las Palmas neighbourhood, an area adjacent to the former Abasto market. The drug lord was subsequently deported to United States territory, where he faces investigations for offences related to drug trafficking. Tatiana, like other citizens from other countries, remains in custody in Santa Cruz, charged with trafficking, carrying and possession of firearms, among other accusations.
