São Paulo Public Prosecutor's Office begins using network of 58,000 cameras to combat organised crime
According to agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br, the São Paulo Public Prosecutor's Office (MPSP) formalised a partnership with São Paulo City Hall to integrate the SmartSampa monitoring system into its investigations against organised crime and its actions to combat gender-based violence.
Two technical agreements were signed to enable use of the system. The first authorises the Special Task Force for Combating Organised Crime (GAECO) to use the cameras in prevention and enforcement operations. This agreement is in force for 12 months, with the possibility of extension.
"Since we first visited Smart Sampa, we have seen the great potential of the infrastructure that São Paulo City Hall has been implementing increasingly, not only in the identification of criminals. Preventive policing, monitoring and the movements of certain targets have enormous potential to improve our investigations," said GAECO prosecutor Luiz Fernando Bugiga Rebellato, at a press conference held on Tuesday afternoon (27).
The second agreement involves the Gender Unit of the Centre for Criminal Operational Support (CAOCrim). The initiative will use SmartSampa to locate men prohibited, by protective measures, from approaching their female partners or ex-partners. Notifications will be made by teams from the Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM). According to the MPSP, approximately 40% of the targets of such protective measures are not found to be notified of the restrictions. This agreement runs for 60 months, also renewable.
The city council informed that the city currently has a network of 58,000 cameras, with plans to expand by a further 20,000 units shortly.
Last week, the leaking of information from the system was reported, resulting from unauthorised access by one of the operators. The city council stated that the case was isolated and does not represent a structural security flaw.
