A 22-year-old driver severely violated traffic regulations in the 16.9-kilometre-long Gotthard road tunnel in Ticino. He now faces a prison sentence of at least twelve months, a fine and the loss of his driving licence.
The Ticino police received a report on 8 July 2025 of reckless driving on the A2 motorway. Officers in Uri canton were alerted and managed to stop the traffic violator at the other end of the tunnel. During the subsequent check, the officers established that the young man had been under the influence of drugs – the test came back positive.
Evaluation of the tunnel's surveillance cameras revealed alarming details: the driver had carried out 21 overtaking manoeuvres on the solid centre line. He also reached a top speed of 172 km/h. With a permitted maximum speed of 80 km/h, this represents an excess of 92 km/h – placing the case in the category of particularly serious speeding offences (dangerous driving offence).
The consequences for the young man are severe: at least one year in prison, a fine and the revocation of his driving licence are at stake. In cases of particularly serious consequences, the vehicle can also be confiscated.
However, this is not a record for the Gotthard tunnel. A British motorcyclist once carried out 47 overtaking manoeuvres on the solid line there.
