A man who tried to hire a killer for his ex-girlfriend over the dark web must now serve eleven years in prison instead of five. The Zurich higher court confirmed the conviction but substantially increased the sentence.
The judges in the second instance followed the assessment of the lower court in Affoltern: the accused had actively searched on the internet for a person who would kill his former partner. He also transferred a sum of money to an anonymous cryptocurrency account for this purpose.
The appeal chamber acquitted the defendant of the charge of attempted instigation to serious bodily harm. However, they were convinced that the man seriously intended to commission a murder.
Fortunately, the planned act was never carried out. Police intervened in February 2023 and arrested the suspect. He has been in pre-trial detention since then.
