Arrest following Aarau shooting: suspect in custody

A 43-year-old Swiss man was apprehended shortly before 1 a.m. during the night of Sunday to Monday, "strongly suspected" of being the perpetrator of the gunfire that killed a 22-year-old Italian woman and injured five other people during a rave party in Aarau, in northern Switzerland. Le Quotidien reports that the Aargau cantonal police announced on Monday the end of the manhunt launched after this tragedy that occurred at the hippodrome in the capital of the German-speaking canton, close to Zurich.

The shots rang out on Sunday around 2:30 a.m., at the moment when the party, which had brought together some 2,500 people, was coming to an end. "Participants were preparing to return home when one or more unknown persons fired several gunshots at a group of people," the police stated in a communiqué published Monday morning. The victim, aged 22, "died on the spot despite resuscitation attempts," according to the authorities.

For more than 30 hours, Aargau police had stated that they were unaware of the aggressor's identity, whether he was acting alone, and where he had fled. With the arrest of the suspect, investigators indicated that they were "favouring the theory that the perpetrator acted alone." No details were provided on the profile of the arrested man, the motive for the attack, or the exact location of his arrest.

The cantonal police announced a press conference for Wednesday afternoon, emphasising that "no information will be released before then."
