In Oberwil in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, multiple detonations shattered the silence during the night into Tuesday at around 4.30 a.m. A resident, quoted by 20 Minuten, reported that three loud banging noises had awakened him. From the window he saw thick smoke. Shortly afterwards, emergency vehicles arrived with sirens and blue lights. The man stated that several motorcycles had departed into the darkness.
Another witness drove through the village around 15 minutes after the explosions and observed how police cordoned off the area around a UBS branch.
The Basel-Landschaft cantonal police confirmed to the media that a cash machine had been blown up. The emergency call came in at 4.36 a.m. At the time of reporting, investigations were ongoing.
