In late June, officers of the Graubünden cantonal police arrested a 50-year-old man in San Vittore. The suspect is believed to have acted as a courier for a network of fraudsters whose members posed as law enforcement officials.
The case began with a call to an 82-year-old pensioner. The criminals on the telephone pretended to be police officers and pressured the senior citizen to withdraw 20,000 francs from his account. However, the elderly man saw through the deception and reported it to the genuine authorities the same day.
Working together with the investigators, he set a trap. At the agreed handover of the cash, police officers intervened and arrested the alleged courier. The arrested man is a Romanian national.
The public prosecutor's office and the Graubünden cantonal police are now investigating the background of the case. They again appeal to the public: legitimate police officers never demand the surrender of cash or valuables.
