Two Portuguese twin sisters, Leila and Laila Lourenço, aged 22, are held in remand detention in the Swiss city of Geneva. The young women were stopped by the airport's customs service, where a baggage check revealed the presence of several kilos of cannabis.
The arrest took place on Wednesday, 24 June. The twins were travelling on a flight from Bangkok, Thailand, with a stopover in Dubai before arriving in Switzerland, where they were to have a second stopover before their final destination in Portugal.
According to information gathered by CM, the two sisters are believed to have been recruited by an international drug trafficking network to collect cannabis in Thailand and transport it to Portugal. The Asian country has become, in recent times, one of the main points of origin for this type of drug, since the cultivation of the plant is not punished in most cases, which favours high production.
Presented to the Swiss court, both were remanded in custody. They will be charged, tried and possibly convicted in the Swiss country. Portugal may intervene in the investigation only at the request of Swiss police authorities, with the Judicial Police able to assist in clarifying the role of the two sisters in the international trafficking network.
