Violent incident at Altstätten railway station – Algerian arrested
On Wednesday, shortly before 1:30 p.m., a conflict between several men escalated in Altstätten. The confrontation took place near the railway station.
When officers from the St.Gallen cantonal police arrived, they found a 26-year-old Afghan with significant injuries. Paramedics cared for the injured man before a Rega helicopter transported him to a clinic.
The other people involved in the altercation had already fled. Thanks to extensive investigative work, officers eventually identified a 24-year-old Algerian asylum seeker as the main suspect. He is accused of having attacked the Afghan man with a sharp tool.
Colleagues from Appenzell Innerrhoden were able to apprehend the suspect and hand him over to St.Gallen. The competent public prosecutor's office is now continuing the proceedings.
Additionally, two further individuals were traced who are believed to have been involved in the brawl: a 24-year-old Algerian and a 32-year-old Tunisian, both undergoing asylum procedures.
At the scene, forensic technicians secured evidence. In doing so, they discovered blood stains, among other things. What exactly led to the dispute and who else was involved remains unclear for now. Investigations are ongoing.
Altstätten cantonal councillor Andreas Broger (The Centre) responded immediately with an inquiry to the government. As a resident of the area, he said he became aware of the incidents directly. He is now demanding information about the security situation at the railway station and planned preventative measures.
