The Winterthur specialist centre for extremism and violence prevention (FSEG) called upon the city's security forces on thirteen occasions in the past year. In the year before, there had been only three such incidents. This is evident from the institution's current annual report, which SWI swissinfo.ch has documented.
The reports largely concerned young people who had drawn attention through threatening language or violent ideation. One specific case from the report describes a teenage pupil with psychological problems who had repeatedly threatened to carry out a bloodbath at the end-of-year celebration.
Nicolas Galladé (SP), the city administrator responsible for the specialist centre, concedes that even good prevention work cannot avert every misfortune. He is alluding to the knife attack on 28 May, which had caused considerable concern among the population. Precisely given such events, prevention work is of critical importance.
Additionally, the institution is increasingly focusing on the phenomenon of the "manosphere" – an online subculture in which distorted ideals of masculinity and rejection of women intermingle. According to the report, educators are observing an increase in disrespectful conduct towards female teachers.
Galladé emphasises that society cannot ignore developments: "We must keep at it and keep our eyes and ears open."
