Explosives alert brings Rheinfelden border crossing to standstill
As gmx.ch reports, an explosives alert brought the Rheinfelden motorway border crossing to a complete standstill for several hours at midday. Explosives detection dogs responded during the inspection of a car with German registration – whereupon specialist units from the federal police were called and a defined danger zone was evacuated.
The two occupants of the vehicle were provisionally arrested. Whether they were released later in the evening remained unclear initially. Media reports suggesting the men were father and son and both had outstanding warrants were not confirmed by police.
"No dangerous substances were found," a police spokesperson stated. "The motorway was able to be reopened." The crossing was not opened to traffic again until the evening.
Due to the operation, motorway 861 was closed, which connects to the A98 on the German side and the A3 on the Swiss side. According to the ADAC, traffic jams kilometres long formed on both sides of the border. Baden-Württemberg police diverted traffic at the Rheinfelden-Mitte exit.
The border crossing is located on the Rheinfelden Bridge between German Rheinfelden (Baden) and Swiss Rheinfelden – a connection used daily by around 30,000 vehicles.
