Major police operation in Engi GL: 60-year-old taken into custody, weapons seized
Following a threatening situation in Engi GL, the Glarus cantonal police deployed approximately 35 officers on Monday. A 60-year-old Swiss man was taken into custody, and several weapons were confiscated.
Large police operation in Sernftal: man arrested, weapons seized
Following a threatening situation in the Glarus hinterland, the Glarus cantonal police cordoned off the village of Engi GL on Monday afternoon with a large police contingent. According to 20 Minuten, a total of approximately 35 members of the police and emergency services were deployed. The Sernftalstrasse was temporarily closed.
At 08:30, the Glarus cantonal police were informed of the threatening situation. "After some clarifications and an assessment of the situation, the Glarus cantonal police decided shortly after 15:00 to deploy with a large contingent to Engi," explained police spokeswoman Michèle Stucki to 20 Minuten.
The person involved is a 60-year-old Swiss resident of Engi who owns at least two dogs. Officers took him into custody; there were no injuries. As police announced on Tuesday afternoon, several weapons were confiscated from the man in the course of investigations.
Residents reported an extraordinary sight to 20 Minuten: specialist vehicles and armed police had populated the small village. "It was like the Wild West," said one resident. The vehicles came from Basel and Grisons, amongst other places. According to 20 Minuten, an armoured vehicle that was deployed on site is an armoured personnel carrier (APC) of the Swiss Army, which is made available to the police.
In addition to regular officers, an intervention unit from the South Competence Centre, to which the Glarus cantonal police belong, as well as a negotiating team from the Glarus cantonal police were deployed. The police did not disclose whether the man's dogs were connected to the threatening situation when asked.
The Glarus cantonal police are continuing investigations into the matter in collaboration with the state and juvenile prosecutor's office of the canton of Glarus.
