On Saturday afternoon at the harbour in Horn TG, an assault occurred in which a man struck a woman. Witnesses to the incident then alerted the emergency call centre. When the first patrol of the Thurgau cantonal police arrived at the scene, the suspect and a young female companion had already fled into Lake Constance.
The uniformed officers on the shore attempted for an extended period to convince the swimmer to return to land. However, the 41-year-old persistently refused and instead drifted about in the water. For more than sixty minutes he evaded arrest in this manner. The water protection police, who happened to be in the area and were called in for support, were also initially unable to apprehend him. Eyewitnesses reported that the fugitive mockingly called out to the emergency responders that they should "go home".
Only when the water police made contact with the couple did both finally allow themselves to be moved towards the shore. However, on shore, the man and the young woman put up considerable resistance against the officers. Four police officers surrounded the suspect as he emerged from the water and headed towards his towel, then placed handcuffs on him. The accompanying person was also temporarily restrained, but was later released.
Both were able to leave the police station on the same Saturday. However, a temporary order was issued against the Polish national that keeps him out of Thurgau canton for several days. The exact circumstances of the physical confrontation at the harbour remained initially unknown.
