The Vaud cantonal court has sentenced a man who lived in Germany and holds Kosovar citizenship to two decades in prison for the killing of his partner. The prosecution had requested exactly this sentence. The judges found that a minor reduction in culpability was warranted.
In addition to the custodial sentence, the judges ordered psychiatric treatment in a closed setting and decided on the deportation of the convicted man. During the reading of the verdict in Albanian, the defendant remained motionless.
The presiding judge drew attention to the extraordinary brutality of the act. He spoke of incomprehensible violence and overwhelming responsibility on the part of the perpetrator. He had not wanted to relinquish his control over the victim even when that meant her death – a typical feature in cases of partner or ex-partner killings of women.
The violent crime occurred in spring 2023 in Vevey. Since 2020, the perpetrator and the woman, then 38 years old, had maintained a long-distance relationship. The man had arrived to visit her shortly before. Quarrels, jealousy and his need for control had strained the relationship.
During a violent dispute, he repeatedly stabbed the woman with a prohibited weapon – a ring with a built-in blade. In addition to murder, the court issued a conviction for breach of Swiss firearms law.
