A man fell into the Zihl in Biel BE during a police pursuit in the night leading into Tuesday. Officers were eventually able to apprehend him.
Bernese cantonal police were called out around 20:00 to a dispute between a man and a woman. When officers arrived, the man had already disappeared. However, he returned to the woman's balcony, whereupon she alerted the emergency call centre again.
When police attended for the second time, the man fled. Police deployed a service dog and a drone in the operation. Officers spotted the man on the Zihl riverbank path in Port. He boarded a boat and threatened officers with a "dangerous object", according to a statement from the Bernese cantonal police.
Police then deployed a Taser. The man fell into the Zihl and swam away. Officers pursued him further using a civilian boat and with support from the water police. At around 23:10, they managed to apprehend him.
The man was taken to hospital for examination and subsequently brought to the police station. He must now answer to the courts.
