Passer-by in Bern attacked by group after attempting to help

In the night into Sunday, 23 August 2026, a man was seriously injured on Weingartstrasse in Bern by several persons. According to 20 Minuten, the pedestrian heard two women screaming at around 1.30 a.m. and rushed to their assistance – whereupon a group of men suddenly attacked him with punches and kicks.

The injured man was able to leave the scene independently and, with the help of a third party, alert emergency services. An ambulance subsequently took him to hospital.

The regional public prosecutor's office Bern-Mittelland has taken over the investigation. Cantonal Police Bern is searching for witnesses – particularly the two women who were present at the scene at the beginning of the incident.

Police describe two alleged perpetrators: the first wore black training trousers, a blue jumper and white shoes; the second wore a bamboo-green jumper, black jeans and white shoes. Both men were 18 and 21 years old respectively, approximately 175 centimetres tall, had short hair and a goatee. They spoke broken German.

Persons with information are asked to contact Cantonal Police Bern on 031 303 25 31.
