The Zurich cantonal police arrested the perpetrator at the scene of the crime. He is a Swiss citizen who additionally holds Turkish nationality. According to the authorities, investigators are treating the violent act as terrorism-motivated. Radicalisation and extremism are considered the driving forces behind the attack.
Eyewitnesses told the tabloid "Blick" that the attacker shouted religious slogans during the incident. He reportedly repeatedly screamed "Allahu akbar" – an Arabic exclamation used in a religious context.
The emergency services treated the three injured people and transported them for medical treatment. The authorities initially provided no further details about the victims' current state of health. Police secured evidence at the railway station and initiated an investigation.
The incident drew attention in the region. Winterthur, Switzerland's sixth-largest city, has experienced several incidents with violent undertones in recent years. The public prosecutor's office and police are working to clarify the exact circumstances and the motive of the 31-year-old.
