A shooting at a rave in the northern Swiss canton of Aargau left one person dead and five injured in the early hours of Sunday morning, according to local police and media.
A 22-year-old woman died of her injuries at the scene, cantonal police confirmed on X. Four men and one woman, aged between 24 and 27, were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to severe. All six victims are residents of Switzerland; their names have not been released under Swiss privacy rules.
Authorities were alerted at around 2.30am to the shooting in Aarau, the canton's capital, located some 29 miles west of Zurich. At the time, the Aarau Rave Vol. 7 event was under way at the horse racing track in the city's Schachen district, according to Swiss public broadcaster SRF. Police spokesperson Pascal Wenzel confirmed the details to SRF.
"The search for the unknown perpetrator is ongoing," police wrote on X. "Possible motives and the exact circumstances of the crime remain unclear."
The fire department cordoned off a large area around the site. Officers, firefighters and ambulances attended in large numbers, and locals were asked to stay away from the area. Police in Freiburg, in neighbouring Germany, also joined the search for the suspect, according to the German news agency dpa.
Swiss daily Blick reported that rave-goers initially mistook the gunshots for fireworks until someone shouted for everyone to get down. The shooting took place shortly after the event ended, the newspaper added. Police subsequently escorted all remaining attendees to a nearby gym.
Swiss DJ Tekibo, who had been performing at the event, wrote on Instagram that "what happened at Aarauer rave is absolutely heartbreaking." He added: "Techno and raves are supposed to be a place for freedom and safety, never a place where something like this happens."
Police appealed for witnesses who recorded videos or photographs at the scene to share the material with investigators. Aarau has a population of approximately 22,300 and lies around 18 miles south of the German border.
