Customs authorities at Geneva Airport stopped two young women from Portugal upon entry. During inspection of the luggage belonging to the 22-year-old twins, officers seized several kilograms of cannabis. Sisters Leila and Laila Lourenço had previously been reported missing after their family had not heard from them for some time.
The arrest took place during a routine inspection. The exact quantity of narcotics found was not initially disclosed. The two Portuguese women are now in pre-trial detention and must answer charges of suspected drug trafficking.
The case attracted particular attention in Portugal because the twins' family had publicly searched for them. Only through the arrest in Switzerland did relatives learn where the sisters were.
