Postal Worker in Baden Region Convicted of Package Theft
A 33-year-old man has been convicted of commercial theft of postal items and sentenced to six months in prison. A further 24 months were suspended. The Montenegrin had worked as a postal worker at the Post logistics centre in Mägenwil and diverted packages for himself there.
According to the Aargauer Zeitung, an unusually high number of shipments went missing at Post in the Baden region in early 2023. A hidden camera was subsequently installed in the accused's delivery vehicle. The footage ultimately provided proof of the offences.
In court, the father of two admitted to stealing around twelve packages. However, the public prosecutor's office assumed a much higher volume of theft and put the amount of the offence at approximately 80,000 francs. The man's lawyer argued that not all missing shipments could be attributed to his client – after all, numerous packages went missing daily.
The accused explained his actions by citing a debt trap with an acquaintance. He wanted to finance an operation and pay off his debts with money from selling the stolen goods.
The court imposed a conditional prison sentence. The lawyer expressed relief that no deportation order was issued.
