Trial in Bülach: man accused of assaulting pregnant partner
Since Tuesday, the district court of Bülach has been hearing the case against a 31-year-old defendant. He is accused of severely assaulting his former partner on multiple occasions during her pregnancy. The charges include life-threatening violence, sexual coercion, repeated bodily harm and threatening behaviour.
The alleged crimes took place between September 2022 and March 2024. They occurred in a shared flat in Glattbrugg and during a holiday. According to the prosecution, the man allegedly seized his girlfriend by the throat on several occasions and squeezed until she lost consciousness.
In one instance, he allegedly beat the woman so severely in her sixth month of pregnancy that a rib was broken. He is also said to have hurled a remote control at her stomach. This throw allegedly caused the amniotic sac to rupture, and the baby had to be born one month earlier than expected.
In March 2024, the defendant allegedly forced his partner to perform sexual acts under threat of violence.
The prosecution is seeking a prison sentence of two and a half years. Of this, six months is to be served in custody, whilst the remainder is to be suspended for three years. Additionally, the convicted person should participate in a programme to combat intimate partner violence. Deportation is not being sought.
