Swiss Tourist on Bali Sentenced to One Year in Prison – Over Nyepi Video
A Swiss man was sentenced to twelve months in prison on Bali for posting an offensive video on the sacred Nyepi day.
One Year in Prison for Nyepi Mockery on Bali
A court on the Indonesian island of Bali sentenced Swiss national Luzian Z. to one year in prison on Thursday. According to reports, the tourist posted a video on social media on 19 March 2026 – Bali's "Day of Silence", known as Nyepi – in which he shouted at the camera: "Fuck Nyepi and fuck your rules too." The post sparked widespread outrage across the island.
In doing so, the Swiss man not only ignored the strict Nyepi rules but made his rule-breaking publicly visible. The verdict is now official.
During proceedings that began in June, Z. attempted to explain his behaviour. He said he never intended to insult the Hindu holiday or the Balinese people. "I deeply regret what I have done and apologise to the Balinese people," he told the court. Z. cited hunger and frustration as reasons for his outburst, explaining that he was unable to buy food during the holiday. He said he had not fully understood the extent of the restrictions in place.
The presiding judge disregarded these explanations. "The defendant's behaviour has insulted the Balinese people, violated their faith and caused public outrage. The defendant must be held accountable for his actions," the judge said when announcing the verdict.
Nyepi is regarded as the Balinese New Year and stands for silence, self-reflection and spiritual renewal. On this day, public life comes to a complete standstill: no lights, no fires, no travel. The airport and seaports are closed; the population stays at home. Violations are considered a serious infringement of one of the island's central cultural traditions.
