A conflict between several men in Altstätten SG escalated into a brutal altercation during the night into Wednesday. A 26-year-old man with an Afghan passport sustained serious injuries. Rescue personnel discovered the wounded man near the railway station and airlifted him to hospital by rescue helicopter. The other protagonists had already fled the scene.
The St. Gallen cantonal police immediately launched an investigation. This led to a 24-year-old man from Algeria, who is staying in Switzerland as an asylum seeker, on the same day. Officers from the Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden arrested the young man and handed him over to St. Gallen authorities. He is considered the main suspect for the injuries inflicted.
Later, investigators succeeded in locating and arresting two further suspected participants in the brawl. Those arrested are a 24-year-old Algerian and a 32-year-old man from Tunisia. Both have submitted asylum applications. The background to the dispute, the exact sequence of events and the question of whether other persons were involved are currently being examined by the public prosecutor's office.
