Vaud police officer convicted of staging cellar break-in and robbing neighbours
A police officer from the canton of Vaud staged a break-in to his cellar and obtained 2500 francs from his insurance. The Fribourg criminal court convicted him.
Montreux police officer stages break-in for insurance fraud
According to 20 Minuten, citing La Liberté, a police officer working in Montreux staged a break-in to his own cellar in order to free himself from financial difficulties. In doing so, he forced open the doors of three neighbouring cellars, stole meat from a freezer as well as other foodstuffs, and subsequently listed the stolen items in a report.
The Vaud officer then filed a report and notified his insurance company of damage totalling 6300 francs. Shortly afterwards, he received compensation of 2500 francs.
Three months later, he gained access to a neighbour's cellar again – this time under the influence of alcohol and medication. He stole several bottles of alcohol and a beer tap system. The following day, he made a confession.
The Fribourg public prosecution office convicted him of fraud, theft, property damage and breaking and entering. The sentence consisted of a suspended fine of 120 daily rates and procedural costs of 600 francs.
