An Italian man attacked a resident in Zermatt with a hammer after a dispute over an allegedly stolen bicycle escalated. The District Court of Visp imposed a conditional prison sentence.

The District Court of Visp has sentenced a 28-year-old man from Italy to 17 months imprisonment on probation and a five-year ban from the country for a violent incident in the Walliser holiday resort. The judges found him guilty of attempted grievous bodily harm and property damage. The information comes from the news platform Pomona, cited by Blick.
The conflict took place on a Sunday evening in March of the previous year. Together with a companion, the convicted man had already located the allegedly stolen bicycle belonging to a work colleague at a multi-family residential building in the afternoon. Shortly after seven o'clock in the evening, the two returned to the location. The Italian then attempted to break the bicycle lock with a sledgehammer.
When a neighbour intervened together with her partner, the situation escalated dramatically. The partner wanted to call the police, which, according to the prosecution, increasingly enraged the defendant. He is said to have seized the tool and swung it at the husband's head. However, the latter was able to block the blow.
During the subsequent arrest, the officers established that the perpetrator was under the influence of alcohol. The convicted man, who was not personally present at the hearing on Tuesday, denied the charges against him. Whether an appeal will be lodged against the judgement, which is not yet final, remains unclear. His solicitor is reviewing the next steps with him.
