The youth court in Dielsdorf has convicted a now 16-year-old Swiss national of attempted murder and sentenced him to a twelve-month prison term. The execution of the sentence remains suspended; instead, the adolescent will be placed in a closed facility.
The attack dates to 2 March 2024. At that time still 15 years old, the accused attacked a man in traditional Jewish dress with a blade in the city of Zurich and placed him in acute danger of death. Investigators believe the teenager had previously attempted to force his way into a place of worship in order to carry out further attacks there. He is said to have radicalised himself online and joined a terrorist organisation.
The prosecution alleged that the accused had planned multiple murders and supported a criminal group. They called for one year of imprisonment plus accompanying measures. The defence counsel, however, requested a six-month sentence without imprisonment as well as outpatient care and disputed the classification as murder.
The judges largely followed the prosecution's case but acquitted the teenager of further threats. In their reasoning, they stated that the deliberate extermination of people of Jewish faith was particularly reprehensible.
