Two Frenchmen arrested after garage break-in in Jona
An attentive bus driver alerted the police when he noticed two French-speaking men. The cantonal police forces of St.Gallen, Zurich and Schwyz arrested the two men, aged 21 and 22.
Bus driver triggers police operation across three cantons
As Google News CH — Crime (de) reports, two men were arrested in the night of Tuesday following a break-in at a car garage in the St.Dionys industrial area in Jona. Several patrols from the cantonal police forces of St.Gallen, Zurich and Schwyz were deployed.
The decisive tip came from a bus driver. He alerted the police on Monday shortly before 23:30 after noticing two French-speaking men who had travelled by scheduled bus into the industrial area. Their behaviour struck him as suspicious given the reports from recent months, writes the St.Gallen cantonal police in their media statement.
Several patrols immediately deployed. The cantonal police forces of Zurich and Schwyz were also notified and supported the operation. The two men were eventually spotted in the area of a garage business.
One of the suspects was already inside the building, whilst the other was stopped whilst attempting to flee. After the police officers surrounded the business, the second burglar could also be arrested. The arrested men are two Frenchmen aged 21 and 22 according to the statement. The material damage was limited to a smashed Plexiglas pane according to current findings.
On Tuesday morning shortly after 06:45, a further break-in at a car garage on Buechstrasse was also reported. The perpetrators smashed a pane and gained access to the building in this way. As car keys were not within reach, no vehicle was stolen. The St.Gallen cantonal police believe that the two Frenchmen are likely to have committed this second break-in between the driver's report and their arrest.
Investigations are now ongoing under the direction of the St.Gallen public prosecutor's office. In addition to several patrols from the three cantonal police forces, various specialist services from the St.Gallen cantonal police were also deployed.
The incident is part of a series of car garage break-ins. In recent days, three such offences alone have been reported, two of them in the Toggenburg. According to reports, the perpetrators typically take the stolen vehicles directly to France. The problem is known to both the cantonal police and garage operators in the region.
