As tagblatt.ch reports, two men were arrested during a break-in at a garage business in the St. Dionys industrial area in Jona in the early hours of Tuesday. The cantonal police of St. Gallen, Zurich and Schwyz were deployed.
A bus driver provided the crucial tip. He alerted police shortly before 23.30, after he noticed two French-speaking men who had travelled by scheduled bus to the industrial area. Given recent media reporting, this seemed suspicious to him, the St. Gallen cantonal police stated in their press release.
Multiple patrols were dispatched immediately. The cantonal police of Zurich and Schwyz were also informed and supported the operation with their own personnel. The two men were eventually spotted in the vicinity of the garage business.
One of the two was already inside the building when police arrived. The other was arrested during an escape attempt. After the business was cordoned off, the second burglar was also captured. According to the communiqué, the arrested men are two Frenchmen aged 21 and 22. The break-in caused material damage: a Perspex window was smashed.
On Tuesday morning, shortly after 06.45, another break-in was reported on Buechstrasse. Unidentified individuals had also smashed a window there and gained entry to a garage building. As the car keys were not accessible, no vehicle was stolen. The St. Gallen cantonal police believe that the two Frenchmen likely committed this break-in between the driver's report and their arrest.
The investigation is being led by the St. Gallen state prosecutor's office. In recent days, there have been a total of three break-ins at car garages in the region, two of them in the Toggenburg. According to current findings, the perpetrators take stolen vehicles directly to France afterwards. The cantonal police and garage owners in the region are aware of the problem.
