Two young Frenchmen arrested after break-in at car garage in Jona SG
An alert bus driver in Rapperswil-Jona reported two suspicious men – the St. Gallen cantonal police arrested them shortly afterwards.

Shortly before 23:30, the driver of a public bus service alerted the emergency control centre after noticing two young men who were speaking French and had boarded his bus to travel to the St. Dionys industrial estate. According to swissinfo.ch, the St. Gallen cantonal police announced on Tuesday that the driver had found the behaviour of the two men suspicious based on reporting from recent months.
Following the bus driver's tip-off, several patrols from the cantons of St. Gallen, Schwyz and Zurich deployed to Rapperswil-Jona. The two men were spotted in the vicinity of a garage business. One of them had already entered the building when the other attempted to flee and was arrested. After the business had been surrounded, the second burglar also attempted to escape – he was likewise arrested. The detainees are 21 and 22 years old.
On Tuesday morning, the cantonal police were notified of a further break-in at a car garage. The perpetrators were unable to obtain the vehicle keys. The police believe that the two Frenchmen committed this break-in between the driver's report and their arrest.
The incident forms part of a series of similar offences: in early April, the St. Gallen cantonal police reported that they had arrested 28 men since the beginning of the year who had broken into car garages in the canton and attempted to steal luxury vehicles. The young men from France had been recruited via social media. Due to the frequency of such break-ins, the police had launched a poster campaign specifically targeting potential perpetrators.
