Discovery in Colina: five detained over kidnapping and homicide of Martín Pérez Burgos
According to noticialdia.com, Chile's Carabineros and the Prosecutor's Office of the Organised Crime and Homicides Unit (ECOH) Metropolitan confirmed the discovery of the lifeless body of Martín Pérez Burgos, 19 years old, in the municipality of Colina. The young man had gone missing on the evening of Monday 26 October, when he was intercepted on Placilla Street in the municipality of Estación Central at approximately 21:00 hours. As a result of operations deployed across the Metropolitan Region, five Venezuelan citizens directly linked to the abduction and subsequent death of the young man were detained.
Following the disappearance, Pérez Burgos's family filed a kidnapping report in the early hours of Tuesday 27 October. Investigations, led by the Carabineros' specialised OS9 department alongside the ECOH Prosecutor's Office, revealed that the group demanded 50 million Chilean pesos for the victim's release. To pressure payment, the abductors sent the family a video in which the young man appeared with a gun pointed at his head, pleading: "Dad, they're going to kill me if you don't pay".
Although the family made a partial ransom payment, the kidnappers cut off all communication. Tracking operations culminated in the discovery of the corpse in an area of Colina. General Jaime Velasco, director of Drug Control and Criminal Investigation of the Carabineros, stated that forensic evidence collected at the scene points to the homicide being committed hours after the kidnapping, and that disputes associated with drug trafficking are being handled as a preliminary motive.
The acting chief prosecutor of the Metropolitan ECOH, Pablo Sabaj, clarified that following several raids it was possible to dismantle the operational nucleus of the criminal group. Four of the five detainees allegedly participated directly in the forced detention; among them was identified the alleged perpetrator of the shooting and the person responsible for withdrawing the money delivered as part of the ransom. The five defendants were made available to the Sixth Guarantee Court for the respective detention control hearing.
