A Carabineros officer sustained serious injuries on Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Los Morros Street, opposite the Conjunto Parque San León de Nos complex in the municipality of San Bernardo, Metropolitan Region. According to biobiochile.cl, the incident occurred around 18:50 hours during a police pursuit that had begun in Pirque.
The institution confirmed that the officer "is out of vital danger", although she has serious injuries, including an exposed fracture to one of her lower limbs, in addition to other minor injuries to her face.
Lieutenant Alejandro Lizana, investigating officer for the SIAT Prefectura, provided details of the operation. According to the uniformed officer, Carabineros were attempting to stop a vehicle with "characteristics of a suspected previous crime" when it fled from the municipality of Pirque. A pursuit at a distance was then initiated with two officers.
One of them managed to catch up with the vehicle at first, whilst the affected officer remained at an approximate distance of two minutes behind. It was at that moment when the collision occurred.
"We have a collision between a Carabineros officer and a civilian vehicle", Lizana stated precisely. The officer indicated that the driver of the civilian vehicle "was entering her condominium" and that it was "a female person arriving at her home from work".
That woman was detained at the scene. "This person is currently detained. Carabineros is conducting the standard procedures", Lieutenant Lizana confirmed.
Regarding the injured officer, Lizana detailed that "she maintains serious injuries at this time" and that "initially she was transferred to a healthcare facility, she is in a clinic" where she is already receiving medical attention.
The exact circumstances of the pursuit remain under investigation. To date, it is unknown whether the operation that prompted the pursuit was related to a robbery or another type of crime.
