Yoani Sánchez regains freedom after arrest in Havana

Cuban journalist Yoani Sánchez, director of the independent newspaper 14ymedio, was released in the early hours of Friday after remaining in detention for several hours by State Security in Havana, according to theobjective.com.

The events occurred around 9.30 on Thursday morning, when Sánchez left her home to do some shopping. Shortly afterwards, she managed to send a message to her editorial colleagues in Madrid: "The police kidnapped me." From that moment, her whereabouts remained unknown until she herself confirmed her return home via social media.

"I've just arrived home, thank you all for the solidarity and the spread of the arbitrary detention I suffered this morning," Sánchez wrote on her X account. The journalist attributed her release to the international pressure generated following news of her arrest: "That support was what managed to unlock the doors and open the bars."

Sánchez announced that she would provide more details about what happened during her detention, with particular attention to the situation of other people deprived of liberty. "Tomorrow I will give details of what happened, but above all, I will tell what I saw in those cells," she stated. The communicator indicated that she would recount "the pain and the total lack of protection in which those without public visibility live," people who, she denounced, sometimes do not even have a mobile phone to communicate their situation. "I have a duty to make their stories public," she added, accompanying her message with the hashtag #SOSCuba.

Sánchez's detention takes place within a week with several arrests of independent journalists on the island. On Monday, Adelth Bonne Gamboa, a CubaNet contributor, was arrested. On Tuesday, journalist Camila Acosta, a contributor to ABC, spent eight hours in police facilities before regaining her freedom.
